Chapter 20

He had almost kissed Meredith yesterday.

What they’d had wasn’t even a proper kiss, more like a light peck on the lips, but it had happened. It hadn’t been his imagination.

And he wished he could have kissed her properly.

He’d had to leave soon after the call from the home furnishings store. They wanted a delivery of vases before the forecasted snow set in during the weekend. He hadn’t wanted to leave—what he wanted was to take the rest of the day off and spend it with Merry—but he’d had no choice.

He returned back to his workshop after taking the call, wanting to rekindle the magic he and Merry had just created, but she seemed eager to leave.

He understood. This had been unexpected, and he didn’t want to push things. Merry’s flushed face and gentle smile told him she needed time to process what had happened between them. And so she left.

But the rest of the day had been slow. He had been busy going about his daily errands, but his mind had been preoccupied with thoughts about Merry.

Happy thoughts, nonetheless.

It had been years since he’d had any such thoughts about a woman.

When rehearsal night came around again, he found himself eagerly looking forward to it for a change. The room was full of mothers dropping their children off, and he looked around, hoping to catch sight of Meredith. Instead, he saw Leah, and she gave him the evil eye from across the room. Ignoring her completely, he turned to see Meredith come towards him wearing the same kind of smile that he probably had on his face.

“Hey,” he said, resisting the urge to take her hand. It had only been the lightest brushing of their lips yesterday but it had started off a chain reaction inside him the likes of which he hadn’t been prepared for. Not only did he want to take her hand, he wanted to put his arms around her and hug her close.

“Hi.” Her perfect smile just made things better. Made it harder for him to resist, and when she was so close that there was only a shoulder’s width between them, he took her hand tenderly. She looked surprised, but she didn’t wrench it away.

“I wish you would stay here during the rehearsal.”

She angled her head. “What role would you have given me?”

“Something backstage, costumes or props.”

She gave him a smile that made him forget where he was for a moment. “Why?”

“So I could have you here the whole time, instead of just at pick-up and drop-off times.”

She leaned in and whispered into his ear. “We can meet outside of rehearsal time, you know.” Then she pulled away, her eyes flashing and twinkling, and making him wonder where she had been all his life.

“That’s true. I could always give you another pottery lesson.”

“I’m a good student.”

“The best,” he replied, wishing he could have that time with her all over again, have her working with him in the workshop.

A silence fell as they looked at one another.
